Introduction

China Materials Conference 2022-2023, hosted by the Chinese Society for Materials Research, was held in Shenzhen, China. This conference is also the first World Congress on Materials, which is the most cutting-edge and high-end conference in the field of materials science. More than 50 academicians of the two houses of Congress and more than 1,200 national outstanding talents to discuss and share cutting-edge materials technology and the latest research results. Mr. Bian Jianhua, Ph.D student of the NEXCEL 2023 Ph.D project "Preparation and properties of petroleum coke porous carbon/paraffin composite phase change materials", attended the conference and presented a report titled "Preparation and Performance Research of Petroleum Coke Porous Carbon/Paraffin Composite Phase Change Materials".

Phase change thermal storage is a common approach to use what is known as phase change materials (PCM), where input heat melts the material and its phase change stores energy. However, the leakage problem of PCM limits their large-scale application. Currently, a common solution is to use porous carbon materials for encapsulation. Petroleum coke is an organic solid waste generated by the cracking of petroleum vacuum residue. The use of petroleum coke to prepare porous carbon materials and encapsulate PCM can not only effectively utilize solid waste materials, but also provide new means for green energy storage.

The pore size of petroleum coke raw materials is too small to load enough PCM. In response to this problem, our team used the salt template method, using phenolic resin as a curing agent and binder, to obtain a block like sample of petroleum coke through grinding and solidification. Then, the sodium chloride inside the sample was used to form a rich pore structure inside the petroleum coke. Preparation of composite PCM using vacuum impregnation method. Petroleum coke porous carbon has strong hydrophobicity and can effectively load paraffin, with a maximum loading capacity of 69.2% and a phase change enthalpy of 146.8J/g. The presence of petroleum coke porous carbon can effectively improve the thermal conductivity of composite PCM, which can maintain a high phase change enthalpy after multiple cycles and have good cycling performance.
